The Origins of Kant’s Aesthetics

Cambridge University Press: January 2023

Drawing from new textual materials, this monograph examines the sources and development of Kant’s aesthetic theory. It gives special attention to 18th-c. British aesthetics (Shaftesbury, Hutcheson, Hume, Kames, Gerard) and the European rationalist tradition (Leibniz, Wolff, Baumgarten, Meier, Mendelssohn). In addition to exploring aesthetic normativity, the sublime, and beauty, it investigates frequently overlooked themes such as ugliness and disgust, genius and the fine arts, and humor.

KANT’S HUMOROUS WRITINGS: An Illustrated Guide

While Kant is commonly regarded as one of the most austere philosophers of all time, this book provides quite a different perspective of the founder of transcendental philosophy. Kant is often thought of as being boring, methodical, and humorless. Yet the thirty jokes and anecdotes collected and illustrated here for the first time reveal a man and a thinker who was deeply interested in how humor and laughter shape how we think, feel, and communicate with fellow human beings.
